   正直に事実として認めよう――ロンドンの王立演劇学校への慈善アルバムである『ウェン・ラブ・スピークス』に載っているスターたちのラインアップは、尋常ではない。45人ものよく知られた名前が、シェークスピアのソネットの森のなかにそれぞれ道を切り開いている――ケネス・ブラナー、ジュリエット・スティーヴンソン、ジョン・ギールガッド、スザンナ・ヨーク、シアン・フィリップス、リチャード・アイ・ドント・ビリーブ・イット・ウィルソン、それから、ほかに39人。そしてこのことが、この企画の強みとも弱点ともなっている――はじめはばかみたいに売れるだろうが、1度か2度聴かれたあとは多くの棚に放置されたままになるのだ。
   たしかに、ジョセフ・ファインズが「テンペスト」からの引用句を小声でささやく、ぎょっとするようなオープニングをはじめとしてたくさんの愉快なコントリビューションがある（もっとも、名前はあげないが、すべての朗読者が臨機応変に対応したわけではない）。しかし、これはありあまるほどの財産というもので、朗読と音楽のバランスをもっと取る必要がある。音楽はシェークスピアの詩にあわせて特別に作曲された（様式的には多方面にわたる）短い8曲で、ところどころでお決まりのリュートのつま弾きが入る。たしかに、マイケル・ケーメンが「オセロ」から作曲した“柳の歌”（出来のよいナンバーの一つ）をソプラノで歌ってほろりとさせるバーバラ・ボニーから、まねのできないスタイルのレディースミス・ブラック・マンバーゾや震え声で歌うブライアン・フェリーまで、ミュージシャンたちは全力を尽くしている。だが、ここには頭数は多すぎるほどそろっているが、成果がいま一つなのだ。夜遅く、部屋を暗くして、シングルモルトを手に聴くのが、一番よい。(Andrew Green, Amazon.co.uk)
